Sample inputs are pre-filled so you can see a result quickly. Results are estimates only and may not be accurate because prices, interest rates, taxes, fees, fuel costs, tariffs, market returns, medical costs, and local rules can change. Formula used

Cylinder V = πr²h

  • Cube = a³
  • Cuboid = l × w × h
  • Cone = ⅓ × πr²h
  • Sphere = ⁴⁄₃ × πr³
  • Hemisphere = ⅔ × πr³
  • Square pyramid = ⅓ × a² × h

About the Volume Calculator

What is the Volume Calculator?

Volume is the amount of three-dimensional space an object occupies, measured in cubic units (cm³, m³, ft³) or as a capacity in litres. It tells you how much water a tank holds, how much concrete a column needs or how much a container can carry.

Pick a shape, enter its dimensions in one unit and the calculator returns the volume, the total surface area (useful for painting or material costs) and the capacity in litres. Remember that 1,000 cm³ = 1 litre and 1 m³ = 1,000 litres.

How to use the Volume Calculator

  1. Shape (sample: Cylinder)
  2. Side / Length / Radius — the side of a cube or pyramid base, the length of a cuboid, or the radius. (sample: 7)
  3. Width (cuboid only) — used only for a cuboid. (sample: 5)
  4. Height — the height of a cuboid, cylinder, cone or pyramid. (sample: 10)
  5. Unit (sample: Centimetres)
  6. Press Calculate Volume (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Volume, along with Total surface area and Capacity in litres.

Formula used

Cylinder V = πr²h

  • Cube = a³
  • Cuboid = l × w × h
  • Cone = ⅓ × πr²h
  • Sphere = ⁴⁄₃ × πr³
  • Hemisphere = ⅔ × πr³
  • Square pyramid = ⅓ × a² × h

Total surface areas: cylinder 2πr(r + h); cone πr(r + l) with slant height l = √(r² + h²); sphere 4πr²; hemisphere 3πr² (curved surface plus flat base).

Tips for using the Volume Calculator

  • Use the internal dimensions of a tank to get its usable capacity.
  • A cone holds exactly one third of a cylinder with the same radius and height.
  • If you know the diameter, halve it to get the radius before entering it.

Frequently asked questions

Work in centimetres: volume = π × r² × h cm³, then divide by 1,000. A tank with a 50 cm radius and 120 cm height holds π × 2,500 × 120 ≈ 9,42,478 cm³, or about 942 litres.

Exactly 1,000 litres. One cubic foot is about 28.32 litres.

⁴⁄₃ × π × 7³ = ⁴⁄₃ × π × 343 ≈ 1,436.76 cm³, or about 1.44 litres.

Volume measures the space inside a solid (in cubic units); surface area measures the total area of its outer faces (in square units) — what you would paint or wrap.
