Average (Mean) —

Sample inputs are pre-filled so you can see a result quickly. Results are estimates only and may not be accurate because prices, interest rates, taxes, fees, fuel costs, tariffs, market returns, medical costs, and local rules can change. Please verify current values before making financial, tax, legal, medical, or business decisions.

Formula used

Mean = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n

  • xᵢ = each value in the list
  • n = the number of values

About the Average Calculator

What is the Average Calculator?

The average, or arithmetic mean, is the sum of a set of values divided by how many values there are. It gives a single “typical” number that summarises a list — average marks, average monthly spending, average daily steps or average sales per day.

Type or paste your numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines. The calculator returns the mean together with the total, the number of values, the minimum and maximum, and the range (maximum − minimum), which shows how spread out the data is.

How to use the Average Calculator

  1. Numbers (separated by commas or spaces) — separate numbers with commas, spaces, semicolons or line breaks; negatives and decimals are allowed. (sample: 12, 18, 25, 30, 15)
  2. Press Calculate Average (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Average (Mean), along with Sum, Count, Smallest and Largest.

Formula used

Mean = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n

  • xᵢ = each value in the list
  • n = the number of values

The mean uses every value, so a single very large or very small number (an outlier) can pull it a long way. For skewed data such as salaries or house prices, also look at the median.

Worked example

These are the sample values already filled in the calculator above, and the result it returns for them:

Tips for using the Average Calculator

  • You can paste a column straight from Excel or Google Sheets — line breaks work as separators.
  • If some values should count more than others (credits, quantities, weightage), use the Weighted Average Calculator instead.
  • Compare the mean with the median: if they differ a lot, the data is skewed by outliers.

Frequently asked questions

Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. For 12, 18, 25, 30 and 15 the sum is 100 and there are 5 numbers, so the average is 100 ÷ 5 = 20.

In everyday use, yes — “average” normally means the arithmetic mean. Strictly, the median and the mode are also kinds of average.

They can distort it heavily. Monthly salaries of 30,000, 32,000, 35,000 and 3,00,000 average about 99,250, which is not typical of anyone in the group; the median (33,500) describes it better.

Only if each percentage is based on a group of the same size. Otherwise, weight each percentage by its group size using a weighted average.
