About the Steel Weight Calculator
What is the Steel Weight Calculator?
Steel is bought by weight. This steel weight calculator multiplies the section area by length and the density of steel, 7,850 kg/m³.
Choose round bar, square bar, plate or pipe, enter the dimensions, length and quantity, and optionally a rate to get the cost.
How to use the Steel Weight Calculator
- Section (sample: Round bar / rod)
- Diameter, Side, Width or Outer Diameter (mm) (sample: 12)
- Thickness (mm – plate or pipe wall) (sample: 6)
- Length (m) (sample: 12)
- Quantity (pieces) (sample: 10)
- Steel Rate (₹ per kg, optional) (sample: 65)
- Press Calculate Steel Weight (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Total Weight, along with Weight per metre, Weight per piece, In tonnes and Cost.
Formula used
Weight (kg) = Area (mm²) × 10⁻⁶ × Length (m) × 7,850
- Round bar = π × d² ÷ 4 (≈ d² ÷ 162 kg per metre)
- Pipe = π × (OD² − ID²) ÷ 4
Stainless steel is slightly heavier (about 7,900–8,000 kg/m³).
Worked example
These are the sample values already filled in the calculator above, and the result it returns for them:
| Input | Sample value |
|---|---|
| Section | Round bar / rod |
| Diameter, Side, Width or Outer Diameter (mm) | 12 |
| Thickness (mm – plate or pipe wall) | 6 |
| Length (m) | 12 |
| Quantity (pieces) | 10 |
| Steel Rate (₹ per kg, optional) | 65 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total Weight | 106.54 kg |
| Weight per metre | 0.8878 kg/m |
| Weight per piece | 10.65 kg |
| In tonnes | 0.107 t |
| Cost | ₹6,925 |
Tips for using the Steel Weight Calculator
- Rolling tolerances mean actual weights can differ by a few percent.
- Order bars in standard 12 m lengths to reduce offcuts.
