About the Safety Margin Calculator

What is the Safety Margin Calculator?

The margin of safety is the gap between your actual or budgeted sales and the break-even point. It tells you how much sales can drop before the business starts losing money.

Enter sales, fixed costs and variable costs as a share of sales to get the cushion in rupees and as a percentage.

How to use the Safety Margin Calculator

  1. Actual or Budgeted Sales (₹) (sample: 50,00,000)
  2. Fixed Costs (₹) (sample: 12,00,000)
  3. Variable Costs as % of Sales (sample: 60)
  4. Press Calculate Margin of Safety (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Margin of Safety, along with Margin of safety amount, Break-even sales, Operating profit (MOS × CM ratio) and Reading.

Formula used

Margin of safety % = (Sales − Break-even sales) ÷ Sales × 100

  • Break-even sales = fixed costs ÷ (1 − variable cost ratio)
  • Profit = margin of safety × contribution margin ratio

A negative margin of safety means sales are below break-even.

Frequently asked questions

With ₹50 lakh sales, ₹12 lakh fixed costs and 60% variable costs, break-even is ₹30 lakh, so the margin of safety is ₹20 lakh, or 40%.

Above 30% is comfortable; below 10–15% is risky.

They are reciprocals: degree of operating leverage = 1 ÷ margin of safety ratio.
