Mean —

Sample inputs are pre-filled so you can see a result quickly. Results are estimates only and may not be accurate because prices, interest rates, taxes, fees, fuel costs, tariffs, market returns, medical costs, and local rules can change. Please verify current values before making financial, tax, legal, medical, or business decisions.

Formula used

Mean = Σx ÷ n Median = middle value of the sorted list

  • n = the number of values
  • Median = for an even n, the average of the two middle values
  • Mode = the value(s) with the highest frequency

About the Mean Median Mode Calculator

What is the Mean Median Mode Calculator?

The mean, median and mode are the three standard measures of the centre of a data set. The mean is the arithmetic average, the median is the middle value once the data is sorted, and the mode is the value that occurs most often.

Each tells a different story. Salaries, house prices and other skewed data are usually better described by the median, because a few very large values pull the mean upwards. The mode is the only one that also works for categories, such as the most common shoe size sold.

How to use the Mean Median Mode Calculator

  1. Numbers (separated by commas or spaces) — separate numbers with commas, spaces or line breaks. (sample: 4, 7, 7, 9, 12, 15, 7, 9)
  2. Press Find Mean, Median & Mode (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Mean, along with Median, Mode, Range and Count.

Formula used

Mean = Σx ÷ n Median = middle value of the sorted list

  • n = the number of values
  • Median = for an even n, the average of the two middle values
  • Mode = the value(s) with the highest frequency

A data set can have one mode, several modes (bimodal, multimodal) or no mode when every value appears exactly once.

Tips for using the Mean Median Mode Calculator

  • If the mean is much larger than the median, the data is skewed to the right by a few large values.
  • The median is not affected by how extreme the largest and smallest values are — only by their position.
  • The range (largest − smallest) is a quick first measure of spread; use the Standard Deviation Calculator for a fuller picture.

Frequently asked questions

Sort the values and average the two in the middle. For 4, 7, 7, 7, 9, 9, 12, 15 the middle values are 7 and 9, so the median is 8.

Then the data set has no mode, and the calculator says so.

Use the mean for roughly symmetric data without extreme values, and the median for skewed data such as incomes, property prices or waiting times.

Yes. If two or more values share the highest frequency, all of them are modes; the calculator lists each one.
