About the Contribution Margin Calculator
What is the Contribution Margin Calculator?
Contribution margin is what each sale contributes towards fixed costs and profit after its own variable costs. It is the key number for pricing, product-mix and break-even decisions.
Enter price, variable cost, units and fixed costs to see the contribution per unit, the ratio and the resulting operating profit.
How to use the Contribution Margin Calculator
- Selling Price per Unit (₹) (sample: 1,200)
- Variable Cost per Unit (₹) (sample: 780)
- Units Sold (sample: 2,500)
- Fixed Costs (₹) (sample: 6,50,000)
- Press Calculate Contribution Margin (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Contribution Margin Ratio, along with Contribution per unit, Total contribution, Operating profit (contribution − fixed costs) and Break-even units.
Formula used
Contribution margin ratio = (Price − Variable cost) ÷ Price × 100
- Operating profit = contribution per unit × units − fixed costs
Products with a high contribution ratio deserve priority when capacity is limited.
Worked example
These are the sample values already filled in the calculator above, and the result it returns for them:
| Input | Sample value |
|---|---|
| Selling Price per Unit (₹) | 1,200 |
| Variable Cost per Unit (₹) | 780 |
| Units Sold | 2,500 |
| Fixed Costs (₹) | 6,50,000 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Contribution Margin Ratio | 35% |
| Contribution per unit | ₹420 |
| Total contribution | ₹10,50,000 |
| Operating profit (contribution − fixed costs) | ₹4,00,000 |
| Break-even units | 1,548 |
Tips for using the Contribution Margin Calculator
- Never price below variable cost – each sale would increase the loss.
- Use the contribution ratio to see how much profit a ₹1 lakh increase in sales brings.
