Factored Axial Capacity (Pu) —

Sample inputs are pre-filled so you can see a result quickly. Results are estimates only and may not be accurate because prices, interest rates, taxes, fees, fuel costs, tariffs, market returns, medical costs, and local rules can change. Please verify current values before making financial, tax, legal, medical, or business decisions.

Formula used

Pu = 0.4 × fck × Ac + 0.67 × fy × Asc

  • Ac = concrete area = gross area − steel area
  • Safe load = Pu ÷ 1.5 (partial load factor)
  • Short column = effective length ÷ least lateral dimension < 12

About the Column Load Capacity Calculator

What is the Column Load Capacity Calculator?

This column load capacity calculator applies the IS 456 formula for short, axially loaded RCC columns with minimum eccentricity. It adds the capacity of the concrete and the longitudinal steel.

It also checks the steel percentage and whether the column is short or slender.

How to use the Column Load Capacity Calculator

  1. Column Width b (mm) (sample: 300)
  2. Column Depth D (mm) (sample: 450)
  3. Concrete Grade (sample: M25)
  4. Steel Grade (sample: Fe 500)
  5. Number of Longitudinal Bars (sample: 6)
  6. Bar Diameter (mm) (sample: 16)
  7. Effective Length (m) (sample: 3)
  8. Press Calculate Column Capacity (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Factored Axial Capacity (Pu), along with Safe working load (Pu ÷ 1.5), Steel area, Steel percentage and Steel check (0.8%–4% practical).

Formula used

Pu = 0.4 × fck × Ac + 0.67 × fy × Asc

  • Ac = concrete area = gross area − steel area
  • Safe load = Pu ÷ 1.5 (partial load factor)
  • Short column = effective length ÷ least lateral dimension < 12

For preliminary sizing only. Structural designs must be prepared and checked by a qualified structural engineer to IS 456, IS 800 and IS 875.

Worked example

These are the sample values already filled in the calculator above, and the result it returns for them:

InputSample value
Column Width b (mm)300
Column Depth D (mm)450
Concrete GradeM25
Steel GradeFe 500
Number of Longitudinal Bars6
Bar Diameter (mm)16
Effective Length (m)3
ResultValue
Factored Axial Capacity (Pu)1,742.1 kN
Safe working load (Pu ÷ 1.5)1,161.4 kN
Steel area1,206.4 mm²
Steel percentage0.89%
Steel check (0.8%–4% practical)OK
Column typeShort column (le/b = 10)

Tips for using the Column Load Capacity Calculator

  • Minimum steel is 0.8% of the gross area; keep below about 4% to allow proper concreting.
  • Columns carrying significant moments need interaction-diagram design, not this formula.

Frequently asked questions

With M20 concrete and 4 × 12 mm Fe 415 bars, Pu ≈ 842 kN, or about 560 kN working load.

They include material safety factors and a reduction for minimum eccentricity.

Many designers use at least 230 × 230 mm for houses, and 300 mm or more for multi-storey buildings.
