About the Brick Quantity Estimator
What is the Brick Quantity Estimator?
This brick calculator estimates bricks and mortar for a wall. It deducts doors and windows, works out the brickwork volume and divides by the brick's nominal size including 10 mm joints.
The mortar is the remaining volume; it is converted to dry volume (×1.33) and split into cement and sand by the mix ratio.
How to use the Brick Quantity Estimator
- Wall Length (m) (sample: 5)
- Wall Height (m) (sample: 3)
- Wall Thickness (sample: One brick – 230 mm (9"))
- Doors & Windows Area (m²) (sample: 2)
- Brick Size (sample: Modular 190 × 90 × 90 mm (IS 1077))
- Mortar Mix (cement : sand) (sample: 1 : 6)
- Brick Wastage (%) (sample: 5)
- Press Estimate Bricks & Mortar (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Bricks Needed, along with Brickwork volume, Bricks per m³, Cement and Sand.
Formula used
Bricks = Wall volume ÷ Nominal brick volume × (1 + Wastage)
- Modular brick = 190 × 90 × 90 mm, nominal 200 × 100 × 100 mm – 500 per m³
- Mortar (dry) = (wall volume − bricks × actual brick volume) × 1.33
Traditional bricks (230 × 115 × 75 mm) need about 392 per m³ with 10 mm joints.
Worked example
These are the sample values already filled in the calculator above, and the result it returns for them:
| Input | Sample value |
|---|---|
| Wall Length (m) | 5 |
| Wall Height (m) | 3 |
| Wall Thickness | One brick – 230 mm (9") |
| Doors & Windows Area (m²) | 2 |
| Brick Size | Modular 190 × 90 × 90 mm (IS 1077) |
| Mortar Mix (cement : sand) | 1 : 6 |
| Brick Wastage (%) | 5 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Bricks Needed | 1,570 |
| Brickwork volume | 2.99 m³ |
| Bricks per m³ | 500 |
| Cement | 3.77 bags (50 kg) |
| Sand | 0.786 m³ |
| Sand in cubic feet | 27.7 cft |
Tips for using the Brick Quantity Estimator
- Use 1:4 mortar for half-brick walls and 1:6 for full-brick walls.
- Soak bricks before laying so they do not draw water out of the mortar.
