About the XIRR Calculator
What is the XIRR Calculator?
XIRR (extended internal rate of return) is the annualised return on an investment where money goes in and out on different dates — SIP instalments, occasional top-ups, partial withdrawals. It is the figure mutual fund statements report as your portfolio return.
Enter each transaction on its own line as a date and an amount: investments as negative numbers and redemptions or the current value as positive numbers. The calculator finds the single annual rate that makes the present value of all the cash flows zero, and also shows the absolute gain.
How to use the XIRR Calculator
- Transactions (one per line: YYYY-MM-DD, amount) — one per line as YYYY-MM-DD, amount — add today's portfolio value as the final positive entry. (sample: 2022-01-10, -50000 2022-07-10, -50000 2023-01-10, -50000 2025-01-10, 190000)
- Press Calculate XIRR (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the XIRR (Annualised Return), along with Total invested, Total received / current value, Absolute gain and Absolute return.
Formula used
0 = Σ Amountᵢ ÷ (1 + XIRR)^((dateᵢ − date₀) ÷ 365)
- date₀ = the date of the first transaction
XIRR is solved numerically. It matches Excel's and Google Sheets' XIRR function.
Worked example
These are the sample values already filled in the calculator above, and the result it returns for them:

| Transactions (one per line: YYYY-MM-DD, amount) | 2022-01-10, -50000 2022-07-10, -50000 2023-01-10, -50000 2025-01-10, 190000 |
| Result | Value |

| XIRR (Annualised Return) | 9.87% |
| Total invested | ₹1,50,000 |
| Total received / current value | ₹1,90,000 |

Tips for using the XIRR Calculator
- For a SIP, list every instalment as a negative amount and the current value as a positive amount dated today.
- XIRR over short periods (under a year) can look extreme; judge performance over 3+ years.
- Compare your XIRR with the benchmark index's return over the same dates.
