About the UK Tax Calculator
What is the UK Tax Calculator?
This UK tax calculator works out income tax and employee National Insurance for the 2025/26 tax year (6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Enter your salary, pension contributions made through salary sacrifice and any other taxable income. The calculator applies the personal allowance (reduced by £1 for every £2 of income above £100,000), the 20%, 40% and 45% rates, and Class 1 National Insurance at 8% and 2%, and shows your yearly and monthly take-home pay.
How to use the UK Tax Calculator
- Gross Salary (£ per year) (sample: 45,000)
- Pension Contributions via Salary Sacrifice (£ per year) (sample: 2,250)
- Other Taxable Income (£) (sample: 0)
- Press Calculate UK Tax (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Income Tax (2025/26), along with Personal allowance, National Insurance (Class 1), Take-home pay per year and Take-home pay per month.
Formula used
Tax = 20% × basic band + 40% × higher band + 45% × income above £125,140
- Personal allowance = £12,570, tapered to zero between £100,000 and £125,140
- Basic rate band = the first £37,700 of taxable income
- National Insurance = 8% on £12,570–£50,270 and 2% above
Scotland has different income tax bands. Student loan repayments and the marriage allowance are not included.

Tips for using the UK Tax Calculator
- Salary sacrifice into a pension saves both income tax and National Insurance.
- Income between £100,000 and £125,140 faces an effective 60% rate because the allowance is withdrawn.
- Check your tax code on your payslip — 1257L is the standard code for 2025/26.
