About the Torque Converter
What is the Torque Converter?
Indian vehicle brochures quote torque in N·m, older manuals in kgf·m and US tools in lb·ft. This torque converter handles them all.
It is handy for setting a torque wrench to a manual's specification.
How to use the Torque Converter
- Value (sample: 1)
- From (sample: Newton-metre (N·m))
- To (sample: Pound-force foot (lbf·ft))
- Press Convert (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Converted Value, along with Result, Conversion factor and Reverse factor.
Formula used
Torque = Force × Lever arm; 1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m; 1 lb·ft = 1.35582 N·m
Worked example
These are the sample values already filled in the calculator above, and the result it returns for them:
| Input | Sample value |
|---|---|
| Value | 1 |
| From | Newton-metre (N·m) |
| To | Pound-force foot (lbf·ft) |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Converted Value | 0.7375621 lbf·ft |
| Result | 1 N·m = 0.737562 lbf·ft |
| Conversion factor | 1 N·m = 0.73756215 lbf·ft |
| Reverse factor | 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179 N·m |
Tips for using the Torque Converter
- Servo motors are often rated in kgf·cm – 10 kgf·cm is about 0.98 N·m.
- Torque and energy share the unit N·m, but torque is never written as joules.
