About the STCG Calculator
What is the STCG Calculator?
Short-term capital gains (STCG) arise when you sell an asset within its short-term holding period — 12 months for listed shares and equity mutual funds, 24 months for most other assets. From 23 July 2024, equity STCG under Section 111A is taxed at a flat 20%; other short-term gains are added to your income and taxed at slab rates.
Enter equity STCG, other STCG, your other taxable income and regime. The calculator shows the extra tax caused by the gains and the effective rate on them.
How to use the STCG Calculator
- STCG on Listed Shares / Equity Funds – Sec 111A (₹) (sample: 2,00,000)
- STCG on Other Assets – taxed at slab (₹) (sample: 0)
- Other Taxable Income (₹, after deductions) (sample: 8,00,000)
- Tax Regime (sample: New regime (default))
- Your Age (sample: Below 60 years)
- Press Calculate STCG Tax (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Tax on Short-Term Gains, along with Tax on equity STCG at 20%, Total tax including other income, Effective rate on the gains and Note.
Formula used
STCG tax = Equity STCG × 20% + Tax on (other income + other STCG) at slab rates
- Equity STCG = gains on listed shares and equity funds held up to 12 months (STT paid)
The Section 87A rebate cannot be used against tax on Section 111A gains in the new regime.

Tips for using the STCG Calculator
- Holding equity for just over 12 months cuts the rate from 20% to 12.5% (with a ₹1.25 lakh exemption).
- Short-term losses can be set off against both short- and long-term gains.
- Intraday trading profit is business income, not STCG.
