About the Life Expectancy Estimator
What is the Life Expectancy Estimator?
How long your money needs to last depends on how long you live. This life expectancy calculator gives a rough, lifestyle-adjusted estimate and, more usefully, a conservative age to plan your retirement finances to.
Choose your gender and answer questions on tobacco, weight, activity and family history. The estimate starts from a baseline for Indian adults and applies adjustments reported in health research — smoking, for example, is associated with losing about 8–10 years.
How to use the Life Expectancy Estimator
- Current Age (sample: 35)
- Gender (sample: Male)
- Tobacco Use (sample: Never)
- Body Weight (sample: Healthy BMI (18.5–24.9))
- Physical Activity (sample: Some regular activity)
- Family History (sample: Nothing notable)
- Press Estimate Life Expectancy (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Estimated Lifespan, along with Years remaining (estimate), Suggested financial planning age and Lifestyle adjustment applied.
Formula used
Estimated lifespan = Baseline + Lifestyle adjustments
- Baseline = 72 years for men, 75 for women (adults)
- Adjustments = tobacco −8 (−2 if quit), obesity −4, overweight −1, underweight −2, active +3, some activity +1, sedentary −2, long-lived family +2, early family illness −3
Planning age = estimate + 10 years (at least 85, at most 100), so you are unlikely to outlive your money.

Tips for using the Life Expectancy Estimator
- This is an illustrative estimate, not a medical assessment.
- For retirement planning, assume you will live longer than average.
- Quitting tobacco and staying active are the biggest controllable factors.
