About the FOIR Calculator
What is the FOIR Calculator?
FOIR (Fixed Obligations to Income Ratio) measures how much of your monthly income is already committed to EMIs and other fixed obligations. Lenders use it to decide whether you can take on another loan.
Enter your monthly income, existing obligations and the proposed EMI. The calculator shows your FOIR after the new loan.
How to use the FOIR Calculator
- Monthly Income (INR) (sample: 1,20,000)
- Existing Obligations (INR) (sample: 25,000)
- Proposed EMI (INR) (sample: 35,000)
- Press Calculate FOIR (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the FOIR, along with Existing Obligations, Proposed EMI and Monthly Income.
Formula used
FOIR = (Existing obligations + Proposed EMI) ÷ Net monthly income × 100
- Obligations = EMIs, credit-card minimum dues and other fixed repayments
Typical limits: 40–50% for lower incomes and up to 55–65% for higher incomes, varying by lender.
Worked example
These are the sample values already filled in the calculator above, and the result it returns for them:
| Input | Sample value |
|---|---|
| Monthly Income (INR) | 1,20,000 |
| Existing Obligations (INR) | 25,000 |
| Proposed EMI (INR) | 35,000 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| FOIR | 50% |
| Existing Obligations | ₹25,000 |
| Proposed EMI | ₹35,000 |
| Monthly Income | ₹1,20,000 |
Tips for using the FOIR Calculator
- Credit-card balances count too — lenders often take 5% of the outstanding as an obligation.
- Closing small loans before applying lowers FOIR.
- Declaring additional regular income (rent, spouse's income as co-applicant) helps.
