About the Break-Even Investment Calculator
What is the Break-Even Investment Calculator?
Losses and gains are not symmetrical. If an investment falls 50%, it must rise 100% just to get back to where it started. This investment break-even calculator shows the recovery needed after any loss and how long it would take.
Enter the amount you invested, the current loss percentage and the return you expect from here. The calculator shows the current value, the gain needed to break even and the number of years to recover at that return.
How to use the Break-Even Investment Calculator
- Amount Originally Invested (₹) (sample: 1,00,000)
- Current Loss (%) (sample: 30)
- Expected Return from Here (% per year) (sample: 12)
- Press Calculate Break-Even (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Gain Needed to Break Even, along with Current value, Years to recover at expected return and Amount to recover.
Formula used
Gain needed = 1 ÷ (1 − Loss) − 1
- Years to recover = ln(1 ÷ (1 − Loss)) ÷ ln(1 + expected return)
A 10% loss needs an 11.1% gain; 30% needs 42.9%; 50% needs 100%; 75% needs 300%.

Tips for using the Break-Even Investment Calculator
- Avoiding large losses matters more than chasing big gains — diversify and size positions sensibly.
- Before holding on to a loser just to break even, ask whether you would buy it today at this price.
- Tax-loss harvesting can offset capital gains while you wait for a recovery.
