About the Blood Pressure Evaluator
What is the Blood Pressure Evaluator?
Enter your systolic (upper) and diastolic (lower) blood pressure readings to see which category they fall into. The main category follows the International Society of Hypertension 2020 guidelines, in line with Indian practice, which diagnose hypertension from 140/90.
The stricter US ACC/AHA categories, which start stage 1 hypertension at 130/80, are shown for comparison, along with mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure.
How to use the Blood Pressure Evaluator
- Systolic – upper number (mmHg) (sample: 128)
- Diastolic – lower number (mmHg) (sample: 82)
- Press Evaluate Blood Pressure (results also refresh as you type). The result card shows the Blood Pressure Category, along with US ACC/AHA 2017 category, Mean arterial pressure, Pulse pressure and Note.
Formula used
Mean arterial pressure = Diastolic + (Systolic − Diastolic) ÷ 3
- Pulse pressure = systolic − diastolic
- ISH 2020 = normal <130/85, high-normal 130–139/85–89, grade 1 140–159/90–99, grade 2 ≥160/100
This is a screening estimate for general information, not a diagnosis. Discuss your results with a doctor.
Worked example
These are the sample values already filled in the calculator above, and the result it returns for them:
| Input | Sample value |
|---|---|
| Systolic – upper number (mmHg) | 128 |
| Diastolic – lower number (mmHg) | 82 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Blood Pressure Category | Normal |
| US ACC/AHA 2017 category | Stage 1 hypertension |
| Mean arterial pressure | 97 mmHg |
| Pulse pressure | 46 mmHg |
| Note | Based on one reading; hypertension is diagnosed from repeated readings on different days |
Tips for using the Blood Pressure Evaluator
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes, back supported and arm at heart level, before measuring.
- Take two readings a minute apart and record the average; check on several days.
- Cutting salt to under 5 g a day lowers blood pressure noticeably.
